Unlike records about individual healthcare events, the eProfil is intended to give healthcare professionals a consolidated overview of the patient’s most relevant health characteristics. Its purpose is to make key information available quickly, especially in urgent care, and to support safer treatment decisions during other types of care as well.

At EU level, Hungary’s eProfil corresponds to the Patient Summary service supported through MyHealth@EU. In participating countries, authorised healthcare professionals may be able to access essential health information from a patient’s home country when it is needed for patient care. However, this service does not function uniformly everywhere yet: availability depends on whether both countries are connected and operational for the MyHealth@EU Patient Summary service.

If you are a Hungarian citizen travelling abroad

If you need medical care in another EU country, the doctor treating you may need important information about your health. This may include details such as allergies, long-term health conditions, the medicines you are taking, medicine allergies or sensitivities, medical implants, or important treatments you have received in the past.

Where the service is available, authorised healthcare professionals may be able to securely access your Patient Summary through MyHealth@EU if it is needed for your treatment. A Patient Summary is a short record containing the most important information about your health. Having access to this information can help healthcare professionals understand your medical history more quickly and provide safer, more effective care, especially in an emergency.

Your health information can only be accessed in accordance with EU and national data protection rules. It also respects the choices you have made about who can access your health data.

In Hungary, you can manage your preferences through your eProfile (eProfil). For example, you can choose to restrict the recording of certain health information or limit who can access specific health data, in accordance with Hungarian law.If you are an EU citizen receiving care in Hungary

If you become ill or need treatment while staying in Hungary, a Hungarian healthcare professional may need essential health information from your home country.

If your home country and Hungary are connected for the Patient Summary service, authorised Hungarian healthcare professionals may be able to access relevant information securely through MyHealth@EU. This can help them understand important health risks, previous conditions, ongoing treatment or other factors that may affect your care.

How this can help in real life

This service can be useful if:

  • you need urgent care while abroad
  • you have allergies or medicine sensitivities
  • you have a chronic condition or implant
  • you are taking regular medication
  • the doctor needs a quick overview of your most important health information

your home country and the country of treatment are both connected to MyHealth@EU

Why it matters

Access to a Patient Summary can support faster, safer and better-informed healthcare when treatment is needed in another EU country.

It can help healthcare professionals see the most important health information in a clear and structured form, especially when the patient cannot easily explain their medical history or when language barriers exist.

Because the service is being introduced gradually, patients should check whether the relevant countries currently support cross-border Patient Summary exchange before relying on it.
